How this works
A charter is quoted as a weekly fee, and the fee is not the cost. On top of it sits an Advance Provisioning Allowance — customarily around thirty per cent — which covers fuel, food, berths and everything consumed on board, reconciled at the end with the balance returned.
The Mediterranean season runs roughly May to September and the Caribbean December to April, with the same boats crossing between them. The good ones are committed a season ahead, and the crossing weeks are when availability appears.
Before you ask
APA
Customarily about 30% of the charter fee, held and reconciled — not a margin.
Terms
MYBA is the standard charter agreement; delivery and redelivery ports are negotiated in it.
Crew
The captain and the chef decide the week far more than the boat does.
Seasons
Mediterranean May to September, Caribbean December to April, with a crossing between.
What does a charter actually cost?
The weekly fee, plus an APA of customarily around thirty per cent for fuel, provisions and berths, plus VAT where the cruising ground applies it, plus crew gratuity by convention. Anyone quoting only the fee is quoting you a fraction.
How far ahead should we book?
For August in the Mediterranean or Christmas in the Caribbean, a season ahead. Outside those windows, weeks rather than months — and the crossing periods are where the best boats become available.
Does the boat or the crew matter more?
The crew, consistently. Two identical hulls with different captains and chefs produce two entirely different weeks.
